PVCH Associate of the Quarter award honors Samuel Lane

February 1, 2024/in All, News/by Jose Madrid

Pawnee Valley Community Hospital would like to recognize Samuel Lane, Director of Environmental and Food Services, as our Associate of the Quarter. Sam works extremely hard behind the scenes at PVCH. He even goes the extra mile by providing exceptional catering service. His plated meals are colorful, and every bite is flavorful, delighting those he serves. It is not unusual for people to be so impressed that they take a photo of their meal before eating it to share it with others. “His plated meals are what everyone looks forward to! They are always a unique experience as he is highly creative and talented. He should be very proud of his work! It lightens the seriousness of our work,” said Melanie Urban.

Each quarter, our Patient and Family Advisory Council (PFAC) determines the recipient based on the many amazing peer nominations received.

PVCH would like to congratulate family nurse practitioner Susan Aistrup on being recognized

January 18, 2024/in All, News/by Jose Madrid

PVCH would like to congratulate Susan Aistrup on being recognized as a PVCH Foundation Healthcare Star by Lori and Brian Hammeke!

The PVCH Foundation Healthcare Stars program was born to recognize those healthcare professionals who have provided exceptional care to their patients. In doing so, they can also give a gift to honor the individual or group nominated. These gifts directly support the care PVCH healthcare professionals provide by purchasing new equipment and technology to improve and expand services. The Healthcare Stars program serves as an encouragement to the staff at PVCH while also recognizing their outstanding dedication to patient care. Everyone nominated receives a certificate with the patient’s comments; their name is placed on the Healthcare Star plaque, and a special Healthcare Stars pin that symbolizes their exceptional commitment to patient care.

Lori and Brian stated, “I went to see Susan a week before I was getting married. She really listened to me and did all she could to get me feeling better before the wedding. She is following up with me to ensure I continue to feel good. She is very caring! I appreciate all Susan did for me.”

Susan’s empathy and commitment have had a profound effect on the lives of her patients. Her commitment to providing exceptional healthcare exemplifies the highest standards of excellence possible. Her patients are truly fortunate to have her as an advocate and caregiver.

This award is a testament to her unwavering passion for making a positive difference, and it serves as an inspiration to others in the healthcare community.

Kathryn Buchanan joins PVCH Family Medicine team

December 21, 2023/in All, News/by Jose Madrid

It didn’t take long for Kathryn Buchanan to notice that the Pawnee Valley Community Hospital (PVCH) team is “patient-oriented with a real sense of community spirit.”

Buchanan is the new family nurse practitioner at PVCH Family Medicine, 713 W. 11th in Larned. She began seeing patients Dec. 11.

“I specialize in family medicine and look forward to meeting my new patients in the coming weeks and months,” Buchanan said. “I will care for and treat patients with acute and chronic diseases and conditions from age 2 and older.”

Buchanan, an Ellinwood resident, noted she is “impressed with the wide variety of PVCH services and up-to-date equipment. This illustrates to me that one of the hospital’s priorities is offering as much quality healthcare as possible close to home.

“In addition, from day one, the environment here has been welcoming. There is a genuine sense of community among staff members who are always willing to help patients and their colleagues. This is important to me.”

Buchanan, who is originally from Mississippi, earned an associate’s degree in nursing in 2019 and bachelor’s degree in nursing the following year. Both degrees were awarded by Mississippi University for Women.

Next came her master’s in nursing/family nurse practitioner earlier this year at The University of Mississippi Medical Center.

Buchanan’s professional background includes serving the Intensive Care Unit and Emergency Department as a registered nurse at North Mississippi Medical Center; registered nurse at Mississippi HomeCare; and med-surg nurse at The University of Kansas Health System.

Melanie Urban, PVCH administrator, noted that “in the brief time Kathryn has been here, she is already demonstrating her practitioner skills, as well as her compassion towards her patients. Kathryn’s talents mesh well with our mission to provide high-quality healthcare right here at home.”

Robben finds best of two worlds at Pawnee Valley Community Hospital

October 26, 2023/in All, News/by Jose Madrid

When Julie Robben was offered the best of two worlds at Pawnee Valley Community Hospital, she jumped at the chance to fill the dual role.

Robben, a Russell native, is the new director of the PVCH Imaging Department where she is part of the leadership team, while also providing direct care to patients.

“Being able to care for patients alongside this amazing team is a real bonus,” Robben said. “They always have the patients’ best interests at heart.

“The hospital’s state-of-the-art equipment allows us to provide most of the services that are available at larger facilities,” she continued. “In addition, it is great having HaysMed as a resource when needed.”

Services offered at the Pat Young Imaging Center include: general x-ray; computed tomography (CT); magnetic resonance imaging (MRI); nuclear medicine; ultrasound; mammography; bone densitometry; and pain clinic.

The center is staffed by registered radiology technologists who are licensed by the state of Kansas. The staff is cross-trained in different modalities and they are all willing to further their education by working toward advanced credentials, Robben noted.

Nuclear medicine and ultrasound services are staffed by HaysMed professionals.

Robben graduated in May 2006 with a bachelor of science in Medical Diagnostic Imaging. She also earned an associate of science in Radiologic Technology.

She is working on her Master of Professional Studies in Medical Imaging, emphasizing administration.

Robben started working at HaysMed in 2005 as a secretary in the Radiology Department, while attending the Diagnostic Imaging Program at Fort Hays State University. She worked part-time in x-ray and CT for several years at HaysMed while working full-time in imaging at Russell Regional Hospital.

“In 2008, I accepted a full-time job at HaysMed where I provided imaging services for the past 15 years,” she said. “I also cross-trained in the Cardiac Cath Lab for two years, performing interventional procedures with the cardiologists.”

Imaging is staffed from 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. weekdays; an on-call technologist is available from 5:30 p.m. to 7 a.m. for emergencies.

“Our technologists work diligently to meet patients’ needs in a timely manner,” she said. “They offer the highest quality service possible.”

Robben also noted that even though October, Breast Cancer Awareness Month, is almost over, it is never too late to schedule a mammogram.

Pawnee Valley Community Hospital, 923 Carroll in Larned, is a 25-bed facility, offering many services not typically available in a smaller facility. Included are 24/7 emergency care; acute, skilled and specialized nursing; surgery; high-tech imaging and laboratory tests; wound care; rehabilitation; and sleep and diagnostic center. PVCH Family Medicine, 713 W. 11th, provides the full range of family-medicine services; physician-assisted weight loss; and women’s health services. The hospital’s number is 620-285-3161; the clinic’s number is 620-804-6007.
